FAQ

What are the best weather conditions for painting?

The optimal processing and drying temperature is between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius (applies to the substrate, the product and the ambient temperature). Drying temperature should be at least 5 degrees Celsius.
Important: Never paint in blazing sun. Always ensure good air circulation.

Drying can be significantly delayed in adverse weather conditions (high humidity, low temperatures, low air exchange) and also due to the type of wood.

When used outdoors, it is important to protect freshly painted wood from rain until completely dry.

Can KORA® products be used for children's play equipment? Are the paints and glazes safe for children?

Many KORA® wood protection products meet the requirements of DIN EN 71-3 “Toy Safety” in accordance with Directive 2009/48/EC and can be easily used for children's play equipment.

When is priming required?

If you want to protect the paint from bluing and mildew, we recommend Koralan® impregnation base. This KORA® product is also used as a bonding agent for subsequent layer-forming coatings such as Koralan® exterior paint or Koralan® decorative glaze. Primers such as Koranol® base colorless or Koranol® timber construction base also provide protection against rot and wood-destroying insects.

Which product makes my wood look as natural as possible?

We recommend a glazing coat. Koralan® natural oils are particularly suitable. The product family includes Koralan® color glaze, Koralan® design glaze, Koralan® wood oil, Koralan® wood oil special and Koralan® greying glaze.

The lightest shade is “UV natural”, which highlights the wood's own color and yet offers very good UV protection. A colorless coat of paint outdoors does not provide UV protection and is therefore not sufficient as a single coat of paint.

When does the wood have to be sanded?

Preparing the wood surface is very important for the durability of the subsequent coat of paint.

A rough sawn surface (fine bandsaw cut) is optimal. Micro-riffling is also very suitable. Planed surfaces offer the worst conditions for good durability and bonding of coating and substrate. Planed surfaces should therefore always be sanded to remove high wood fibers and to achieve a uniform wood surface. The same applies to weathered wood and wood with an uneven surface structure.

Can KORA® products such as paints, glazes, primers or wood oils be diluted or shades mixed?

All products are ready to use and should not be diluted. In principle, it is possible to mix different shades of a product. However, we do not recommend this. Anyone who does this anyway should note down the mixing ratio for later traceability.

The safest way to Desired color runs via our Koralan Tint system. It produces almost any color for seven KORA® products.

What is the best way to store the products?

It is best to store the products in original containers. The containers must be sealed tightly after use. The storage temperature should be between 5 and 30 degrees Celsius. Please follow the instructions on the containers.

After how many years is a subsequent coat necessary?

It is not possible to make a general statement about shelf life and aftercare intervals due to the various influencing factors.

Basically, the lighter the shade, the shorter the gaps are. The durability of a coating depends on various factors: location/exposure, UV radiation, intensity of weathering, structural wood protection (e.g. roof overhangs), color, wood surface (rough sawn, planed, sanded), wood selection.

As a rough guideline, one to three years can be assumed for lighter shades and two to four years for darker shades.

Only regular maintenance protects your wood surface from sun, rain and greying and reduces the swelling and shrinkage of the wood.

Which product is suitable for painting wooden windows?

Wooden windows and doors are among the dimensionally stable components that are exposed to the weather. We recommend our middle layer glaze for coating Koranol® Compact MSL. It is important to always repair paint damage as quickly as possible in order to maintain weather protection and the appearance of the paint in the long term. ‍ ‍

How can I combat a woodworm infestation?

In the event of an infestation (e.g. in the roof truss), you should consult an expert. You can find experts in your area by searching directly on the DHBV (German Wood and Building Protection Association e.V.) website at www.dhbv.de. Or talk to our team in Advice & sales Please contact us so that we can arrange a contact for you.
